How about a pair of pearl earrings in Luxembourg!

May 12th, 2010

Pearl earrings might be a word widely used in the fashion scene of jewellery. But it also has a mentionable use in the film industry. When I say Luxembourg in the heading, please don’t shake your head thinking too much about it. I am talking about Luxembourg Drama Films with the display of pearl earrings. There might be a thousand of scenes in almost every Hollywood or Bollywood film where someone is wearing a pair of pearl earrings.  But this is not the topic of our discussion. There was a British film by the name “Girl with a Pearl Earrings” released in the year 2003. This UK drama film Girl with a Pearl Earring, was adapted by Olivia Hetreed based on a novel written by Tracy Chevalier. This film is named after a painting with a same title by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The painting depicts a girl wearing pearl earrings. This film ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ was directed by Peter Webber and produced by Andy Peterson and Anand Tucker. The film was edited by Kate Evans and the nice cinematography by Eduraddo Serra. The film stars Colin Firth as the painter Johannes Vermeer, Scarlett Johannes as Griet the girl wearing the pearl earrings.

This film is a portrayal of the relation between master and servant. The pearl earrings wearing girl is Griet whose father a ceramic painter loses his vision. Due to this, Griet was forced to work as a domestic help in Vermeer’s house. During her interactions as a servant Vermeer discovers her interests and knowledge in painting. Vermeer subsequently begins giving her lessons in painting, taking care to keep their meetings secret from his wife Catharina, who would react very negatively if she found out the relation between Griet and Vermeer. On a routine trip outside her master’s house, Griet befriends a young man named Pieter played by Cillian Murphy. Vermeer’s sponsor Van Ruijven sees Griet on a visit to the Vermeer household and asks the painter if he will give her up to him to work in his own house. When Vermeer refuses, Van Ruijven ordered to serve him with a painting of Griet for him. Vermeer pierced Griet’s earlobe so that she can wear one of his wife’s pearl earrings for the portrait. After the painting Griet runs to Pieter to get emotional strength.  And this is somehow the whole story in the film.

The film was so nice from all the angle of appreciation that it won various film awards in the year 2003, namely Dinard British Film Festival Audience Award, Dinard British Film Festival Golden Hitchcock, C.I.C.A.E. Award etc. It also got various nominations like Academy awards of Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design. BAFTA nominations for best British film, best score, best cinematography, and best costume design, best hair make-up, best actress, best supporting actress, best art direction and best adapted screenplay. This film depicting a girl wearing pearl earrings also won nomination for the best film in British Independent Film Awards.

So, if you are looking for a film showing a little of jewellery with a difference, you can book a ticket of ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ for the next show at your nearest multiplex.

How To Make A Pair Of Pearl Earrings

April 29th, 2010

Pearl earrings are easy to make. If you don’t have enough money to buy a really nice pair of pearl earrings as the local jewelry store, consider making your very own pair of pearl earrings. It will take the time required to run the the craft store and then some time for you to actually make the pearl earrings, which would take not longer than an hour. Take a look at this article to learn how to make a pair of pearl earrings.

First of all you need to go tot he craft store and purchase the necessary tools to make your pearl earrings. These nicer more durable tools are more expensive but you will be glad you paid the extra money on them. You will need a crimp tool, a pair of round needle nose players, and some snippers. Once you have your tools to make your pearl earrings, you need to buy the accessories that will adorn your pearl earrings. Crimp ends or beads are a must to hold the pearls in place. There are many different kinds of crimp ends or crimp beads that you can choose from. Sterling silver are really nicer crimp ends that I would choose. Next move on the the pearl itself. Depending on what type of craft store you go to, some might carry some pearls while others might carry different ones. If you want a good quality pearl for your pearl earrings, then buy Swarovski pearls. If you want french wire pearl earrings, buy french wires, or if you want leverbacks, buy them. If you don’t have peirced ears, you can buy clip on pearl earrings as well. You will also need to buy hair pins.

Now you need to sit down with all your accessories and design your pearl earrings. The steps given below are for simple pearl stud earrings. Take a pin and slide one pearl onto it. Then, with the round needle nose plyers, wrap the pin around two or three times to create an elegant wrap. Slide the french wire, or whatever peice you would like on, and snip the remaining pin. That’s it. Thats how easy it is to make pearl earrings. Even though I choose to make simple pearl stud earrings, if you follow those basic steps, you will be well on your way to creating wonderful designs of pearl earrings.
