Cultivated Pearl Necklaces: Timeless Conception of Pureness

July 11th, 2010

Pearl is the birthstone for June celebrators. This is the ground why most June brides favour to wear cultured pearl necklaces and earrings to fit in with their pearly white dress. It exhibits celibacy and simpleness and the pureness of pearls beams to the wearer and to the other people as well. Pearl is one of the timeless jewelry pieces that never seem to go out of fashion. It may have long been there already, but pearl jewelries like cultivated pearl necklaces, earrings, and bracelets always scream of beauty and elegance. It can be worn for all affairs and can cope with any kind of outfit, be it informal, plain, or conventional.

Evaluating a Pearl

The quality of the pearl actuates the price of the jewelry. And caliber is exposed in the pearl’s surface texture, pattern, splendor, color, nacre heaviness, and its size. The most typical pearl is the one that reflects light through the layers of nacre or crystalline nacre. The reflection of the pearl is what gives it its predominating color. There are light shades of pearls like white or cream but the most worthful ones are those that are silvery or pinkish in color. Still, the most sought after are the darker shades like black that may intimately be blue or green. Actual pearls are not absolutely round, there has to be rather a a couple of imperfectnesses. It is vital that you know how to analyze pearls most specially if you have the fetish for cultured pearl necklaces.

Different Styles and Types

cultured pearl necklaces come in different patterns and vogues. There is one formation of the pearl necklace that they call the bib style. It is made from several strands of pearls in a variety of lengths. Another pearl formation is what they call the collar or dog collar. Pearls are interlinked from multiple strands, which are worn high on the neck than the customary necklaces. Choker is just like the collar and dog collar except that they are worn lower than the collar style, and it is about fourteen to sixteen inches long. There is other type they call the princess, which is very familiar. They are worn just slenderly below the neck. Still another style is the rope, which looks the longest among the other types. It may be worn single or double or by tangling it. There are also various types of rope necklaces that may be clasped anywhere on the necklace. This is for easy adaption and to shorten the strand of the cultured pearl necklaces a little bit. There is also the matinee type, which frequents during semi-official to ceremonial social occasions because they are immaculate for suits and dresses. Opera type of cultivated pearl necklaces are put-upon to watch the opera and in any other formal functions that demand putting on an evening gown.

Birthstones: Timeless, Dazzling Jewelry

July 8th, 2010

Gemstones are always a good choice for gifts and birthstone jewelry is a gift that’s personal but not intimate. Don’t think birthstone jewelry is old fashioned or passé.  It’s not. There are modern designs, glamorous settings, and dazzling diamonds accenting a choice of gemstones.

Before purchasing any gemstone jewelry be aware of how gemstones can be treated or altered that are perfectly accepted in the jewelry industry and don’t devalue the stone or increase its value. These treatments are not fraudulent on certain gems as long as the change is permanent.

Heat Treatment

Exposing the gemstone to sophisticated processes that heat the gemstone increases the depth of color, lightens it or completely changes it.  It’s acceptable for use on the birthstones sapphires, amethyst, citrine, and topaz, as well as other gemstones.

Radiation

Used in conjunction with heat treatments or by itself, radiation has been in use to improve or change colors and is accepted by the jewelry industry as long as the change is permanent and stable. However, some stones that have been subjected to radiation outside the United States are radioactive and not safe to wear.  This occurs primarily with blue topaz.  If the stone or jewelry has been purchased in the US, it is safe.

Radiation is acceptable for diamonds to change from off white to a fancy color such as blue, green or yellow.   These fancy colored diamonds are usually identified as irradiated because they are not nearly as valuable as natural fancy colored diamonds. Other birthstones where radiation is acceptable are topaz to change from white or pale yellow to golden yellow or blue and pearls to produce blue and gray shades such as those found in “black” or south sea pearls. Radiation of sapphires is not acceptable because the color change does not last.

Oiling

Emeralds are oiled as a matter of course to fill in tiny crevices and cracks. The cracks appear white and lessen the vibrancy of the green color.  It is an acceptable practice.  Using green oil is not acceptable. Emeralds should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner as it removes the oil.

Modern Birthstone Jewelry Designs

Step up to the stepped designs in rings.  Five stones in amethyst the birthstone for February, with the largest stone in the center cut as a baguette, (rectangle) with two smaller baguettes on each size, set in white gold is a  modern take on a classic design.

Picture a ring with a huge nearly 12 ct amethyst, the birthstone for February, wrapped by two strands of diamonds over the stone and accented by both a .89 ct citrine and .54 ct blue topaz set in 14 K white gold.  The look is stunning and so will you be.

Four strands of polished peridot beads, August’s birthstone, the longest 21 inches and the shortest 18 inches are accented with fresh water pearls. Compliment the necklace with a ring featuring two peridot stones set in 18 K gold. The look is up to the minute fashionable.

Freshwater pearls are more irregularly shaped than cultured pearls and come in a variety of colors which make them more interesting than the classic string of graduated pearls.  Eight strands of vibrant pink freshwater pearls make up a necklace that can be worn with jeans for a funky fashion statement, with a business suit to work, or out to dinner and a night on the town.  Pearls are the birthstone of June.

Opals say October to many people because they are the birthstone for October and because the fire within the opal often flashes orange, red and gold, the colors of Autumn. A nearly 1.7 ct black opal is set with four orange fire opals in a ring that says “look at me’ to everyone.

The birthstone for January is garnet and the choices are seemingly endless from rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings.  Whether the choice is polished, beads, or faceted you’re sure to find the perfect birthstone gift for a January girl.   Try faceted garnets on hoop earrings, or a necklace of polished garnets in the traditional red.  A red garnet center stone surrounded by pink sapphires in marquise and round cuts is a ring that is reminiscent of spring and is striking.

There are even gemstones associated with anniversaries as well as birth months.

First year – Gold

Second – Garnet

Third – Pearl

Fourth – Blue topaz

Fifth – Sapphire

Sixth – Amethyst

Seventh – Onyx

Eighth – Tourmaline

Ninth – Lapis Lazuli

Tenth – Diamond

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, Christmas, or just a special day, birthstone jewelry is always appropriate and elegant.  Consider traditional birthstones in untraditional settings or designs. Combine different colors of the same birthstone for an unusual and surprising look.

Pearl Rings: a Timeless Pieces of Jewelry

February 18th, 2010

Pearls have long been valued as gemstones and in fact, they have been cultivated in different countries in recent years mainly for use in jewelry and pearl ring proves to be one of the timeless pieces of jewelry to treasure.

Pearls differ from each other in colors, shapes and sizes. The perfect round pearls are very rare and are expensive. Although the round pearls are popularly used in rings but recent trends show the use of the button shapes and what is more wonderful about it is that regardless of the kind, size and color of pearl it can be set in either the yellow gold, white gold or sterling silver looking lovely by themselves but when set with diamonds and other precious stones give a more gorgeous look. There are so many great designs to choose from that a pearl jewelry lover finds it overwhelming to select the perfect one. And you can be sure that.

Dating back when rings were used to show a person’s social class, today the same jewelry is used for a variety of purposes including adornment, loyalty and love to husband and wife as well as gifts which show that there had been great advancement in the field of jewelry. Pearls are either natural or cultured. Cultured pearls can either be freshwater or saltwater where the saltwater pearls are more expensive than the freshwater pearls. They are of three types – the Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian – and of the three; the Akoya Japanese and Tahitian pearls are the most demanding. To choose a quality pearl over an imitation requires a great knowledge and skill. Luster is the most vital aspect of a pearl’s quality. The more is the surface reflection the good is its luster. Pearl rings featuring the pearl alone or set with diamonds and other gemstones can be a great alternative as an engagement ring. Though pearl rings are rarely used as an engagement ring but one can take a chance and it is for sure that it would not go waste from receiving complements. Such pearl rings besides looking more gorgeous are more expensive than the traditional diamond ring that is sure to make the spouse feel proud. The reason cited behind expensiveness of pearl jewelry is that it is as difficult to set a pearl ring as it is easy to set a more durable mineral gem.

You can also check the thickness of the nacre by rubbing it against your tooth, and feeling the roughness which will also help to get the perfect pearl ring of your dreams.
